Clean a Bathtub with Baking Soda

Did you know that it is incredibly easy to clean a bathtub using only baking soda!?

I spent a few years buying “natural” tub cleaners. They worked great, but then I discovered that it is just as easy to scrub a tub using only baking soda.

Using baking soda to scrub a tub is not only effective and natural, but it is also inexpensive! This was a huge perk to me as well.

In the past 4 years I have lived in 4 different homes with 4 different types of bathtubs. I am happy to report that this baking soda cleaning method has been effective in each of these tubs!

With that being said, cleaning a bathtub with baking soda is my go-to method. I am excited to introduce you to it as well!

Why clean a bathtub with baking soda?

There are so many perks to cleaning a bathtub with baking soda!

One, it is cost effective. Baking soda is relatively inexpensive and a little bit can go a long ways when it comes to cleaning.

Two, it minimizes the amount of products needed in the home. Baking soda has so many wonderful uses- from baking to cleaning- it can do it all!

Three- it’s natural! It is important to me to keep dangerous toxins out of the home. Baking soda is completely safe to ingest, which means that it is completely safe to clean with. (perk- I can allow my toddlers to “help” me clean without being worried about their toxin exposure!)

Four- it is effective. Baking soda is incredibly effective at removing soap scum and stains off of a bathtub. In my opinion, it is just as effective + efficient as other “natural” tub cleaners that are out there on the market.

How long does it take to clean a bathtub with baking soda?

The time that it takes to clean a bathtub or shower with baking soda depends largely on the type of tub, the size of the tub, and how dirty the tub is.

A tub with a lot of texture on the floor will take longer to clean. Likewise, a very dirty tub or a large tub will take longer to clean as well.

I have spent anywhere from as little as 10 minutes up to 40 minutes cleaning a bathtub.

What are the cons?

The biggest con to cleaning a bathtub with baking soda is the effect that baking soda can have on some of the stainless steel water spouts and drains in a tub.

Baking soda can remove water stains from stainless steel water spouts, shower heads, and drains. However, it can also give these features a slightly “white” discolored look to them. If you are concerned about that, simply avoid scrubbing any metal surfaces in the tub with the baking soda.

Vinegar + baking soda to naturally clean a bathtub?

Most bathtub cleaning instructions online instruct the use of vinegar with baking soda.

Personally, I don’t find that the vinegar does much. So, I simply use baking soda.

If you wish, you could spray vinegar over the baking soda after it has been sprinkled into the tub. The vinegar and baking soda will react and fizz. Simply wipe it up approximately 10 minutes afterwards- if you wish to go this route.
